Job Title: Assistant Fire Marshal

Category: Full Time, Exempt

Salary Range: $42,000-$48,000

General Statement of Responsibilities: Position is responsible for ensuring codes and life safety compliance through inspection of new and existing structures. Oversees and performs technical inspections and enforcement work in securing and maintaining regulatory compliance with the Florida Fire Prevention Code along with ordinances established by the city.  Participates in activities that encompass fire safety, public education, building and construction inspections and plans reviews for compliance with fire codes and ordinances. The position will be involved in fire prevention activities and training to improve public awareness of fire safety.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of the structure of the Marathon Fire Rescue Department and surrounding emergency services.
  • Knowledge of applicable fire rescue codes, laws, statutes and ordinances; management and administrative techniques; principles of effective supervision; layout and operation of the City jurisdiction; station fire protection systems; and the Monroe County emergency communications system.
  • Five years technical and/or administrative work experience in fire rescue service relating to fire prevention, EMS, fire suppression.
  • A current Florida State Fire Fighter Certificate of Compliance
  • A current Florida State Fire Investigator I
  • Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression processes.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • The appropriate class of driver’s license and completion of an approved EVOC course in accordance with Florida Statutes.
  • A Current Florida State Certified Fire Safety Inspector I.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with City employees, other emergency services personnel, and general public.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed decisions which apply to daily work problems.
  • Ability to operate a computer, including ability to use MS Office software.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression processes.
  • Ability to attain certification in required areas of responsibility, as applicable or directed.
