Multi-Certified Building Inspector/Plans Examiner – Part time or Full time

This position is responsible for on-site inspection within the Building Department, plans examination and review as well as enforcement of City Ordinances and Florida Statutes regulating building construction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs inspections and keeps appointment schedules for the Building Department. Reviews building plans, specifications and checks calculations of complex buildings to ensure compliance with current building codes. Follows policies of on-site behavior and helps resolve code violations. Maintains licensing and training requirements per Florida Statutes. Interacts with Code Enforcement and assists with Stop Work Postings.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Performs on-site inspections as necessary. Performs plan reviews of applications as necessary. Coordinates permit application routing and internal interactions among all City departments. Maintains department decisions through in-person, telephone, email and written documentation and communication on a daily basis.

Salary: $50-$75K dependent on qualifications and skills.

Education and/or Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and State certification as an inspector or plans examiner is required. Residential Combination (One and Two Family Dwelling) Inspector or electrical/plumbing inspector certification. Must be physically capable of climbing ladders, stairways and onto rooftops. Exposure to flooding and /or hurricane forces may be required. Familiarity with fire-rated construction and the Florida Fire Code are preferred. Thorough familiarity with the Florida Building Code is required. Work experience must include documented word processing skills, and written and verbal communication skills. International Code Council certification preferred but not required.

Language Skills: English / Spanish bilingual preferred, Oral and written.

Other Skills and Abilities:
Possess a valid Florida driver’s license. Ability to meet the public in person or over the telephone in a courteous and professional manner; work harmoniously with numerous personalities; have a high level of initiative and be able to work with minimal supervision; be able to fit into a public/professional office environment; self-motivated; ability to effectively manage multiple projects, meet challenges and deadlines, maintain focus and appropriate conduct under pressure; familiarity of municipal government desirable; must be willing to work extra hours as required. Ability to maintain confidentiality is mandatory. Ability to gain a thorough knowledge of the Marathon City Code required. Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner, often in stressful situations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with city personnel and the public.
