Salary:  $90,000-$100,000  DOQ

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to perform highly complex technical inspections, reviewing and analyzing residential and commercial construction plans and specifications submitted for permitting construction projects to ensure compliance with all building codes, city ordinances, and regulatory requirements applicable to the work.  

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  •  Inspects or performs plans examination of residential and commercial structures, to ensure  that the work being performed meets the minimum requirements of all applicable codes and ordinances.
  •  Assists and clearly communicates with the public both orally and in writing, to explain Code and Ordinance policy questions.  Assists other inspectors or plan examiners as required.
  •  Organizes and plans daily routes to ensure efficient use of time and resources.
  •  Collects, organizes and maintains documentation associated with assigned inspection or plans examination activities.
  •  Submit required daily reports and other written or oral presentations to the Building Official or his designees.
  • Performs independent research and training on codes to ensure current knowledge of trends and developments in the field.
  • This is a customer service oriented position must  be able to work with the public under all circumstances.

 Minimum experience of 3-5 years required and DBPR licenses or ability to obtain within 6 months of hiring

Residential 1 & 2 Inspector & Plans Examiner:  Ensures compliance with the Florida Building Code, Standard for Hurricane resistance, and City Ordinances.  Required to be licensed in Inspection services and Plans Examiner or able to apply and receive from DBPR licenses within 6 months of hire date.  Salary dependent upon experience.

Plumbing Inspector & Plans Examiner:  Ensures compliance with current adopted Plumbing Codes and City Ordinances for the installation of sanitary drainage systems, stormwater drainage systems, irrigation systems both potable and non-potable water distribution systems, and the setting of all plumbing fixtures.  Required to be licensed in Plumbing Inspection services and Plans Examiner or able to receive from DBPR licenses within 6 months of hire date.  Salary dependent upon experience.

Mechanical Inspector & Plans Examiner:  Ensures compliance with current adopted Mechanical Codes, Gas Codes, and City Ordinances as they relate to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and exhaust systems.  This also includes the installation of refrigeration equipment, ductwork systems, electrical, and gas-operated and cooling appliances, fireplaces and gas-operated boiler/water heaters, hydronic and fuel gas piping systems, and solar energy equipment.  Required to be licensed in Mechanical Inspection services and Plans Examiner or able to receive from DBPR licenses within 6 months of hire date.  Salary dependent upon experience.

Electrical Inspector & Plans Examiner:  Ensures compliance with the current NEC, FBC, Life safety, and City Ordinances as they relate to all electrical services, distribution panels, sub-panels, and branch circuits, including all raceways, wiring, grounding, switches, outlets, and devices.  The Inspections and Plans review are done in all industrial, commercial, agricultural, and residential structures that receive electrical system power from utility companies, generators, and solar systems.  Required to be licensed in Electrical Inspections & Plans Examiner or able to receive from DBPR licenses within 6 months of hire date.  Salary dependent on experience.

Building Inspector & Plans Examiner:  Ensures compliance with the Florida Building Code, Standard for Hurricane Resistance, and City Ordinances.  Required are inspection and plans review of footings, slabs, lintels, tie-beams, wall framing, roof framing, and all sheathing, shingles, stairs, guardrails, handrails, grading for proper drainage, and any other aspects of structural safety, fire safety, and handicap accessibility.  Required to be licensed in Building Inspections and Plans Examiner of able to receive from DBPR licenses within 6 months of hire date.  Salary dependent on experience.

 Other Skills and Abilities:

Possess a Florida driver’s license.  Ability to meet the public in person or over the telephone in a courteous and professional manner; work harmoniously with numerous personalities; have a high level of initiative and be able to work with minimal supervision; be able to fit into a public/professional office environment; self-motivated; ability to effectively manage multiple projects, meet challenges and deadlines, maintain focus and appropriate conduct under pressure; familiarity of municipal government desirable; must be willing to work extra hours as required.  Ability to maintain confidentiality is mandatory.    Ability to gain a thorough knowledge of the Marathon City Code and the Florida Building Code.  Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner, often in stressful situations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with city personnel and the public.
