Sunset Bay Park is one of the City of Marathon’s hidden natural treasures, located on the Gulfside of Grassy Key at Morton Street and Kyle Avenue. Comprised of three lots, the park offers visitors a peaceful setting to experience the natural beauty and wildlife of the Florida Keys.
The park features an upland hammock filled with native vegetation, including several species of palms, Gumbo Limbo, Poisonwood, Sea Grape, Mahogany, and white, black, and red Mangroves. This natural habitat provides a home and feeding area for a variety of wildlife, including crabs and numerous species of birds.
Visitors may spot White-Crowned Pigeons feeding on Poisonwood berries, Hawks and Vultures soaring overhead, Ospreys calling from nearby, and Woodpeckers, Mockingbirds, Cardinals, and Hummingbirds moving throughout the vegetation.
Sunset Bay Park also features a kayak launch, providing convenient access to the surrounding Gulf waters for paddlers looking to explore the area.
Whether you are launching a kayak, enjoying the wildlife, exploring the native vegetation, or simply looking for a quiet place to relax, Sunset Bay Park is a wonderful place to experience the natural side of Marathon. And, as the name suggests, it’s also a great spot to enjoy a beautiful Florida Keys sunset!
