In order to protect and improve the quality of our nearshore waters for boating, fishing, snorkeling, and diving, the City of Marathon initiated a major wastewater and stormwater improvement program. These improvements will improve water quality, protect public health and enhance the City’s economic vitality.

The Utilities Department functions include maintaining stormwater structures and lines, several wastewater treatment facilities including buildings, equipment and force main and vacuum collection lines, reclaimed water systems, biosolids/sludge management, well monitoring and injection systems, fuel tanks and vehicles, telemetry, odor control systems, permit compliance, budgeting and reporting.

No. The final inspection must be scheduled 48 Hours in advance and a date/time specific appointment will be provided by the City’s utilities department.
Two inspections are required for residential connections by the City?s building department. The first is a lateral inspection and the second is a final inspection where the connection to the house can be made.

A property owner must either convert or abandon an existing septic system through the Department of Health (305) 289-2721. Proof of approval by the Department of Health at (305) 289-2721 for conversion or abandonment of septic system or abandonment of cesspool is required within 180 days after City's final inspection in order to close Building Department permit.

If DOH septic abandonment/ cistern conversion approval is not received within 180 days of the final inspection, the permit will become expired.

The City’s sewer lateral permit application form should be used.
You may apply for a permit at any time.
This would be done after the first or “lateral” inspection has been approved and only on the day of the “final” inspection. The City will install and test a valve in the vacuum pit connected to the wastewater service line. Do not disconnect from the existing system until you are certain that everything is functioning properly.
