CITY OF MARATHON/CONTRIBUTED
STILL TO SERVE ON MARATHON CITY COUNCIL
Robyn Still is the newest member of the Marathon City Council. She was selected to serve at a
special call meeting on January 31 as a result of a coin toss, ending Jody “Lynny Thompson” Del
Gaizo’s bid to fill the vacant seat on the Council. A video of the proceedings confirmed the
outcome.
According to Marathon’s Charter, nominees must have the majority support of the Council to
take office. Because the Council was tied 2-2 after a special call meeting on January 24 -- with
equal support for both Still and Del Gaizo -- Marathon City Attorney Steve Williams told the
sitting Council that Florida law “explicitly” allows the City to “draw lots.”
“The most recent example was in the town of Chiefland, Florida,” said Williams. “There was a
dead tie in an election and they drew straws.” Williams said. “The law allows us to pull names
from a hat, flip a coin, use bingo balls – any method where there is no opportunity for skill and no
bias in the outcome; where it is truly a 50-50 chance.”
The vacancy on the Marathon City Council was created in early January, when Wofsey resigned.
On January 11, at the regularly scheduled City Council Meeting, the sitting board called a special
meeting on January 24 to fill the vacant seat. A week ago, the field of 14 applicants was narrowed
to the two candidates, and both had equal support however the council was tied 2-2. The Council
scheduled the January 31 meeting in an attempt to avoid the coin toss.
Prior to the coin toss, Still told the Council, “I have been in public service my entire adult life.
Prior to the election season, I committed to educating myself about the needs and issues of our
city. I think I am the best person to fill that seat,” Still said.
Still moved to Marathon in 2016 after a career in law enforcement in Georgia. She and her
husband, Chris, own and operate The Tackle Box. Still will be sworn in at the next regularly
scheduled meeting of the Council on Tuesday, February 8 at 5:30 p.m. at Marathon City Hall.
