Job Description

Job Title:  ROW/Landscaping Maintenance Technician 

                                                                  

Department: Public Works                           

Reports to:   Public Works Manager                                          

Supervises: N/A

Position:      Full-Time, Non-Exempt

 

Summary:

This position is responsible for performing semi-skilled work maintaining street right of ways and grounds using a variety of machines, tools, and equipment.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates trucks and light street repair equipment.
  • Operate mowing equipment such as riding mowers, weed eaters, pole saws, chain saws, tractors, skid steers, and similar equipment. 
  • Mowing and trimming of roadside areas and other public areas throughout the City. 
  • Cutback of vegetation and trees within the City’s right of ways. 
  • Routine Maintenance of equipment used to perform daily functions.
  • Checks equipment and sets out and picks up traffic control devices.
  • Loads and unloads materials for City departments.
  • Pressure washing and maintenance of City’s recreation properties.
  • Performs custodial tasks, i.e., emptying and cleaning waste receptacles though out the City.
  • Performs a variety of ground maintenance tasks, e.g., edging, mowing, trimming, waste and litter removal, fertilizing, placing sod, raking, planting.
  • May be required to work late hours, weekends, and emergency response.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency and after-hour calls on nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responsible for ensuring all work and activities are performed safely and in accordance with City policies.
  • Operate chipper.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems to perform routine maintenance on pressurized and drip irrigation systems.
  • Assists with Citywide hurricane preparedness including installing hurricane shutters on City buildings.

 

Non-Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance and improvements on City buildings, streets, and property.
  • Shovel dirt or sand in making trenches or other excavations. 
  • Clean culverts and catch basins to provide Storm-water systems maintenance.
  • Perform upkeep and maintenance on City parks and recreation and maintenance equipment per schedule in accordance with safety standards.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position may have responsibility or authority, limited to the direction of temporary workers.

 

Qualification Requirements:

Landscaping Maintenance Technician I is an entry level position.  2 years performing landscaping maintenance and general maintenance experience preferred. 

Landscaping Maintenance Technician II requires applicants to have proficient knowledge of riding mowers, weed eaters, pole saws, chain saws, tractors, skid steers, and similar equipment.  Must be able to demonstrate all the skills previously listed.  MOT Certified is preferred. 

Landscaping Maintenance Technician III requires all the above plus MOT Certified.  Operate construction equipment such as skid steer, excavator, loader, and tree cutting tractor. Must be able to demonstrate supervisory skills as a crew leader.  CDL preferred. 

 

 

Education and/or Experience:

High School Diploma or G.E.D., with a minimum of three years’ experience in building and grounds maintenance, and machinery operations.

 

Language Skills:

The employee needs to have the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondences, and memos and the ability to write simple correspondences, effectively present information one-on-one, in small group situations, to customers, clients, and other employees of the City.  Ability to communicate in the English language.

 

Mathematical Skills:

The ability to add and subtract two digit numbers, to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s, and perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distances. The employee needs to have the ability to use a ruler.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Other Skills and Abilities:

Possess a valid State of Florida driver’s license.

The employee must be able to respond to emergencies under reasonable circumstances within 60 minutes.
